Choosing a Cosmetic Surgeon

An operation can have a significant impact on your self-esteem, so it's important to choose a cosmetic surgeon wisely. A patient concerned with improving the aesthetic appearance through various surgical procedures needs to choose a surgeon who has the right training. Schedule a consultation with the doctor. During this time asses whether the doctor is courteous, attentive, and wiling to answer your questions. One of the first criteria to examine is the surgeon's credentials. Being certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery is a good sign that usually indicates that a doctor has completed rigorous training and hands-on experience in plastic surgery. This is important because a medical school graduate who passes the state boards can legally title themselves a “specialist”, even though they may not have residency training in that specialty. If a doctor claims to be a specialist in cosmetic surgery or in a certain procedure, ask what training he or she received in that area of expertise. In addition, ask how many years the surgeon has been in practice. A patient should also evaluate before-and-after examples of a doctor's work. Set up more than one consultation. You may find that given several skilled doctors, one may produce results which are more to your liking. You should also trust and feel comfortable with the person you choose.
